And congratulations to all the Trail Ambassadors who in 2011 have surpassed their collective total of volunteer hours from 2010!

Valley Green Repair

Valley Green was the first area where volunteers followed up after Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.  They took on such projects as spreading soil to fill in eroded areas, shoveling silt out of the rain garden, and moved gravel from the grassy area back to walkways and Forbidden Drive.  All in all, over 100 volunteers helped to put the area back to its beautiful and historic self where park visitors traverse regularly and weddings are held throughout the year.

Andorra—From Storm Damage Repair to Whispers Along the Wissahickon

Andorra was one of the hardest hit areas by Irene and Lee. With Whispers Along the Wissahickon scheduled for October 21, FOW had to work even harder to get the grounds back into good shape.  In September and October FOW volunteers did everything at Andorra from moving fill with machines to stringing lights to checking in guests at the event. Special thanks to the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department who fixed some of the most heavily damaged areas, such as a trench that had formed along the driveway.

Volunteers have also been doing follow up trail work and clean up in the Andorra meadow area.  Thanks to Dan Mercer for leading projects in this area, and Cynthia Turecki and Meloni Brennan for leading a group from the Pennsylvania Equine Council.

Yellow Trail Near the Saul School

Volunteers were able to follow up on an FOW trail project area that was damaged along the Yellow Trail near the Saul School.  An area near a footbridge where stepping stones had been placed was eroded badly.  Volunteers came together filled in and re-graded this area for safer passage.

Volunteer Thanks for Storm Damage Repair
